This year’s picks for spring color trends points to the direction of yellow. From London, Paris, to New York- designers are crazy about adding this bright and cheery color into their wardrobe palate. I’m normally one to shy away from trends, for as my favorite Karl Lagerfeld puts it: “Trendy is the last stage before Tacky.” However yellow is a color I have always adored having in my own closet and enjoy wearing, but I have always heard the same comments:
“Yellow looks great on you but I look so washed out, I could never”
“Yellow doesn’t compliment my skin tone”
Well my dear, with a few Darling touches I’ll guide you through the best ways to make this hot spring color work for you:
Lets start with basics. Yellow is associated with happiness, fun, joy, and cheerfulness- so naturally its a color that stands out. One fun way to take advantage of this is:
1)Wearing it as an accent color:
Bags, shoes, earrings, sunglasses, scarves. Combine one or two of these or throw them over your outfit as an accent color to add a pop of cheerfulness to anyone’s day.
2)Know your hue
This is probably the only tip you really need to know.
For my light and fair skinned beauties– Stick to darker yellows and mustards to avoid that whole “washed out” dilemma.
For my medium to olive skin toned lovelies – Also darker but you can throw in some pastel, honey or gold tones as well. I fall into this category and I will limit the brightness of my yellow until I’m nice and tan in the summer. Then I can take advantage of the tips for my:
Dark to black skin toned babes: Basically any shade of yellow compliments your skin tone! You can go as dark or as bright as you feel for the day and look fantastic!
3)Color combinations
My favorite, as you can see from the photos, is white and yellow. Yellow certainly looks great over neutrals; but as long as you mind the patterns and brightness of the colors, you can really make yellow look amazing with any complimentary colors like pink, green, blue, orange, etc.
As with anything else, the most important rule with style is that you keep it true to yourself. Your style, after all, is a way to “say who you are without having to speak.”-Rachel Zoe
