The 144th Kentucky Derby is upon us on May 5th and you know what that means: Time to break out big hats, mint juleps, and seersucker! Let’s throw a Derby Party!
While the locals get to experience The Kentucky Derby live at Churchill Downs, getting in on the fun is simple with these steps:
Stream ability
First things first: You’ll want to have your TV dialed and ready to stream it. If you don’t have cable or satellite, you can watch the derby on NBC sports
Coverage will begin on May 5th with undercard races on NBC Sports from noon to 2:30 p.m. ET, then from 2:30-7:20 p.m. it will air live on NBC
Food and Drink
The traditional drink is the Classic Mint Julep. Obviously a must! You’ll want to have wine and beer on hand for those not too fond of the iced bourbon drink.
Of course you’ll need tea. Lots and lots of iced sweet tea.
As far as food is concerned, if you are a die hard entertainer The Kentucky Derby site has a list of dishes you can make here. Guess you can say you took it straight from the horses mouth (pun intended)!
I like to keep thinks simple: hors d’oeuvres, finger foods, and simple desserts to help balance out all those delicious Juleps!
Did I mention the Iced sweet tea?
Attire
You’ll want to tell your guests to come dressed in “Garden Party Attire”.
Ladies: This is the chance to bring out that Southen Belle in you times 1000%. Big floppy hats are a must. The more decorated and flamboyant the better!
Gentlemen: Classic navy and seersucker are always winners, but his is not a time to economize in your style! Bring out those bright pastels and bold stripes! Did I say sweet tea?
Activities
Here’s what brings it all together! You can actually participate and bet on the Kentucky Derby from where you’re at! Sign your party up here.
Follow all these steps and this’ll be a nice little shindig you’ve put together!
