Oh picnic, ‘how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height. My soul can reach…” that’s all I remember from that sonnet y’all; but really, when I think of relaxing summer fun, picnics are a staple on my list.
Back in 2012 when I was on a very serious “Dave-Ramsey-Budgetting-to-Get-Debt-Free-in-10-months” plan, I was cutting back any and everywhere. So on weekends or evenings when I wanted some kind of inexpensive meal outside of the house, picnics were a favorite go-to:
- They can be as cheap (or extravagant) as you want them to be.
- You get to soak in the beauty of nature, and that my friend, is so good for your soul.
- No TV, no sports games, no movies, nothing to distract you from connecting to others (or other…) The stories, the laughs, the memories…*sigh*..
- I can make this list long, but honestly: Who doesn’t love being out in nature, connecting with great company, and munching on yummy food?!
Exactly.
Now, before you run off to enjoy this wonderful pastime, let me give you a few tips:
1)Prep in advance: It just makes life easier. We stuck to a very simple platter of cheeses, yummy fruits, and crackers; but if you’re planning sandwiches, or a fun and fancy on-the-go recipe (like the ones here)then DEFINITELY plan in advance.
2)Pack trash bags: For starters, clean up runs 1000% more smooth when you do this….but also…you don’t want to liter, silly!
3)Location! Location! Location!
Nothing sets the mood better than having a beautiful view of some grand body of water, the loveliness of trees, and-well honestly just being in any part of nature will do the trick. Explore new locations if you want to be adventurous.
Caveat: If you’re planning on drinking alcohol, or packing glass containers, check the local laws to make sure the area (beach, park, etc.) allows it! Also: check the bathroom situation in advance, especially for my alcohol consuming friends. You’re welcome.
4) Decorations: Location might set the mood, but the presentation locks it in. As they say, the devil is in the details. It’s the little pieces that will make your picnic more memorable. Trust me.
You don’t need to spend big bucks on this either! You can hit your local dollar store: They’ve got fun disposable décor items, decorative plastic silverware, plates, and even tablecloths. Inexpensive, pretty and disposable-Picnic perfect!
5)Sunscreen/bug spray: You’re bringing food, you’ll be in nature and you’re under the sun.
6)HAVE FUN!!!!!!!
