Few places inspire awe and reverence like the Murchison-Honaker House. Nestled in the historical town of Farmersville, this Victorian style home built in the 1800’s greets you and provides an enchanting escape into another era.
I had the pleasure of calling this place home for a ladies retreat earlier this month and still dream about the wonderful memories we created in these tastefully curated rooms. Memories that Allison and Dwain (the owners) helped orchestrate and are forever treasured by all the ladies in our group.
There’s a certain “Je ne sais quoi” about the house as a whole and the rooms individually. Each room takes you on a different journey and lets your mind roam into a different era (but the fast wifi is there to remind you you’re still in touch with the modern world!)
For our ladies retreat, we had a full agenda of planned activities. To fuel us, we were treated to delightful morning pastries from local businesses and topped off our final night with a decadent four-course meal (catered by the lovely people of @overyondertexas).
One of my favorite moments was enjoying cocktails before dinner in the Ladies Parlor. Drinks in hand, and a record player boasting music to set the atmosphere, we had the chance to catch up with others in the group to chat about our day. We had many giggles about the day’s events and got to marvel at how gorgeous everyone looked.
From the artisan door number plates to the heirloom china of three generations, Allison leaves no detail behind. There’s many artistic pieces on the wall reminiscent of galleries, which I learned is intentional as the owners are looking to host art shows and galleries for local artists. all the art displayed in the home IS for sale by the artist (except pieces the owners have personally purchased).
If you’re in search of a place that provides a comforting escape from the bustle of life, The Murchison-Honaker House is just the place! I’m certain you’ll fall in love with her just as I have. Allison’s aim is for “others to feel what a special place this home was to the original owners 150 years ago and to all of us today. To be in awe of how she (yes the house is a she) still stands grand and has withstood the test of time!”
A few questions with Allison (the owner):
*What inspiration did you find in this home? The history of the family that built the home has been the biggest inspiration. The Honakers, who built the Victorian part of the home in 1894, kept the home in their family until 1968. So researching the family and their ancestors and researching their involvement in the growth of Farmersville in the late 1800’s has been very inspirational!
*What is your overall favorite bedroom (and why?) My favorite is Guest bedroom #1, which is the one downstairs! I know originally this room was most likely not a bedroom, most likely it was a parlor since it has a fireplace in it, but I find that the space has set the tone and design for the rest of the home. Bringing the soft colors into it with touches of blush, makes for a very feminine design, which has carried throughout the first few rooms we have worked on. Obviously, the men’s parlor has taken on its own personality, of course but over all the Victorian style we are trying to immolate with the modern touch first started in that bedroom has carried over into other rooms!
*Is there anything else you’d like us to know about the home? We are looking forward to hosting retreats, weekend getaways, bible studies, workshops, classes and so much more! We truly want to customize the time people stay here in the home to match their plans, needs and wishes! We just want to share this special home with so many and allow others to create memories and moments here at The Murchison-Honaker House!
