When you live in an ever-growing metroplex and want a small escape from that life, heading into the country is the best remedy. So that’s what I did.
Earlier this year I found myself in the Texan wine country, Fredericksburg, and since then I dreamed of coming back with my beloved for a quick weekend getaway. Which finally came into fruition this past weekend. Driving into Fredericksburg is such a calming experience in and of itself. It so romantic to drive through fields on the country side in between small towns; where most folks greet you with a friendly smile and a cup of coffee-depending on where you stop.
Where We Stayed – Stonewall Motor LodgeJust before you hit historic Fredericksburg is Stonewall, Tx -a small town jam packed with so much history and charm; and as you’re driving through HWY 290 of this town, you will find Stonewall Motor Lodge.
With only 12 rooms, this motel was originally opened in 1964 as a haven that would house president LBJ’s press guests. Complete with a dark room, specifically reserved for developing photos back then!(The beloved Press room is still alive in the newly renovated motel today)
In 2018, a few friends gathered together to completely renovate and re-brand this historic space; and so ladies and gentlemen if you’re in the area and want to rest your head in the most comfortable beds, look into this lovely motel. It is the perfect blend of charming retro meets modern luxury.
There’s also a beautifully decorated rooftop area where you can enjoy lovely evenings with a bottle of wine and mingle with another guest or two: For more information or to make a reservation, click here.
WineriesWhile there are so many noteworthy breweries, wineries, and distilleries to try, along with the beauty and history of this area… its difficult to hit them all in one trip! We did get to visit two of my absolute favorite wineries in the area.
Kuhlman CellarsI loved Kuhlman Cellars the first time I got to do a tasting with them back in the summer. They have a signature wine & food pairing course where they take seasonal bites and pair them with five wines crafted by Kuhlman cellars. I’ve taken it twice now and both times I’ve taken away something new-nuggets of gold, as I call them. I’ve learned more and more about why I like the wines I like with certain foods and how certain wines help enhance their flavor.I can’t recommend this winery and pairing course enough!(Shop this look below)Also, the rooftop terrance and surrounding areas are a great way to spend your afternoon relaxing with a glass of wine or two from their cellar!

4.0 cellars4.0 cellars is a fun winery simply based on the story of how it came about. Three different wineries (McPherson Cellars, Brennan Vineyards, and Lost Oak Winery) that call homes in cities outside of the Texan wine country decided to collaborate on a winery that would house all three in Fredericksburg. Alas, 4.0 Cellars was born-and the rest is history.Should you visit this winery, you’d be amiss if you didn’t try their cheese and wine pairing.Carl Hudson taught our course, and he’s such a remarkable story teller and connoisseur- the kind of person you can easily spend a complete afternoon exchanging stories with over a delicious bottle of wine…or a few. Certainly look out for his name-he will give you the most entertaining and knowledgeable session! To learn more or to reserve a course , click here.
If you happen to follow me on social media, you’ll know our trip was cut short. It is flu season after all, and it hit both Norberto and I really bad. We tried our best to fight through it, but by evening time we called it and made the drive home. However, this town and lovely lodge has not seen the end of us. We fully intend to return and share more of out travel adventures with you.
All that to say, if you’re in the mood for a most charming quick weekend trip- a drive around this town, booming with wineries, breweries, and other attractions will surely cure that itch.
